PETER Hawkins has been the representative for about onethird of the new Truganina Ward since 2000.
The rest of the area may be new to the incumbent councillor, but he said his experience as a Wyndham resident for almost 30 years, and his government involvement, will help him deal with a broader area.
He’s been at the Moorabool Shire Council as a town planner since 2004, but the Labor Party member has also worked in the electoral offices of Julia Gillard and Mary Gillett.
Mr Hawkins said he’d made a point of doorknocking his constituents about 40 times a year, not just before elections.
He was elected unopposed to the Council in 2003.
Managing the area’s growth, upgrading infrastructure, and building community spirit are his key objectives.
His idea to call for a tram network in Wyndham was one of his most memorable proposals, which came under some public fire.
But Mr Hawkins said he’s not afraid to be criticised for unpopular views.
“Public debate is healthy,” he said.
