WYNDHAM City Council will spend almost $9 million on six major road upgrades across the municipality.
The reconstruction work will take place in Hoppers Crossing, Wyndham Vale, Werribee and Werribee South.
The contracts for the works are among the first from the council’s $19 million allocation for road and pavement upgrades in the 2007-08 budget.
The mayor, Shane Bourke, said the projects demonstrated the council’s commitment to maintaining and improving Wyndham’s road network.
“Road safety is a priority to ensure the needs of the community are being met,” he said.
“With Wyndham expanding so rapidly, the council must be proactive with infrastructure upgrades.”
One of the projects is for stage two of the reconstruction of Diggers Rd, between K Rd and Whites Rd.
This includes the lowering and reconstruction of Southern Rural Water irrigation pipe across Diggers Rd at the K Rd intersection, which is expected to take 14 weeks.
Hoare Bros has been awarded the $786,221.70 contract with works expected to begin soon.
Stage one of the project, reconstructing from Aviation Rd to just north of K Rd, is about two weeks away from completion.
The following projects will start later this month.
Reconstruction of Sycamore St, Centaur Way and Yernda Court, Hoppers Crossing, expected to take 30 weeks. Universal Concrete Contractors has been awarded the $1,396,942.42 contract.
Reconstruction of Mortimer, Dewan, Gossamer, Julian and Stawell Streets, Werribee.
Unidel Constructions was awarded the $1,359,098.46 contract, which is expected to take 36 weeks.
Reconstruction of Feathertop Drive, Mt Eagle Way. East Gateway, Whitehaven St and Alkira Close in Wyndham Vale, expected to take 32 weeks, with the Dacton Group being awarded the $2,224,142 contract.
Reconstruction of Herbert Ave, Harris Ave and Dyer, Hughes and Langridge streets, Hoppers Crossing, expected to take 32 weeks. Universal Concrete Contractors was awarded the $1,797,722.46 contract.
Work on Egret, Olsen and Thompson courts, Werribee, is planned to begin in mid-October.
Panhold Constructions was awarded the $424,904.15 contract, which is expected to take 19 weeks.
Cr Bourke asked residents to be patient wile the projects were carried out.
“While there may be some inconvenience to motorists for the duration of the roadworks, the outcome will mean a much easier ride,” he said.
