WYNDHAM City Council gave the thumbs up to development of the Point Cook Town Centre, during a meeting last week.
On the drawing board for more than a decade, the centre will be built on the corner of Dunnings Rd and Boardwalk Boulevard.
The centre, set to become a driving force of Point Cook’s economic growth, will be accessible by public transport and is a short walk from an abundance of homes.
The overall development will be more than 30,000 square metres and include a Coles supermarket, Aldi, Target, a medical centre, apartments and commercial space and car parking.
Under the planning permit, developers Walker Corporation will build in two stages, eventually adding restaurants.
Ian Muir, president of Point Cook Residents Association, said residents would be “extremely pleased” to see the work progress.
“It will be good for that part of Point Cook, because we’ve only got Sanctuary Lakes shopping centre now, and it will give everyone a lot more variety with entertainment,” Mr Muir said.
He said the group had a meeting with Walker Corporation about 12 months ago to keep in the loop, and was satisfied with the outcome.
The centre is part of the Point Cook Concept Plan, endorsed by the council in August 2001.
