KNOWLEDGE and awareness opens the door to understanding and tolerance.
That was the message from adherents at the Virgin Mary Mosque, who held an open house at their Hogans Rd centre last Saturday.
Mosque officials said the event was “incredibly successful”.
They now hope to do it as an annual event.
“The feedback we received was extremely positive,” said Tasneem Chopra, who attends the mosque every week with her family.
“People were saying to us that they pass this mosque every day and wondered about it.”
The mosque welcomed about 200 children, families, politicians and community leaders during the day.
“One principal told us she wanted to bring students here to help break down misconceptions,” Ms Chopra said
Besides learning about the basic tenants of Islam, visitors were invited to get their hands decorated with henna and enjoy a traditional Muslim feast.
