WYNDHAM’S fresh-faced prep pupils entered the next phase of their lives last Wednesday when most of the state’s schools began classes for 2007.
Preps at Cambridge Primary School in Hoppers Crossing assembled a spicy multicultural mix, helping boost the number of nationalities represented at the school, to 55.
Assistant principal Nella Cascone said the children in the prep A class came from Indian, Chilean, Vietnamese, Chinese, Somalian, New Zealand, Filipino and Turkish backgrounds.
As part of a program to encourage tolerance and respect, each of the new students will soon be photographed and their image stuck on a world map that displays their origins.
“We mapped the children last year to determine what family backgrounds the students had,” Ms Cascone said.
“The conversation it causes when they walk past is respect.
“It’s amazing.
“It shows a sense of who they are and their identity and among the whole population there is a tolerance and respect for it”.
