WYNDHAM City Council will submit three high-crash intersections for Federal Government Black Spot funding.
They are Hogans Rd at Dowling Ave, Hoppers Crossing, Ballan Rd at Westminster Dr, Werribee, and Princes Highway at Tower Rd, Werribee.
These intersections have been selected as they are the sites of common accident types that may be able to be tackled with measures such as signal installation, signage and line marking, according to a council officer.
The council adopted a report last week that identified the highest casualty accident intersections within Wyndham, based on figures taken from the VicRoads Crash Stats over the five-year period to the end of 2005.
The purpose of collating the information was to identify whether actions had been taken to reduce casualty crashes, as well as identify intersections at which action was still required.
Federal Black Spot funding is provided for local and arterial roads.
VicRoads is responsible for some roads, while the council is responsible for others.
A Black Spot is defined by VicRoads as an intersection that has three or more casualty crashes within a five-year period. The figures show the Hogans Rd and Dowling Ave intersection had six injury crashes, Ballan Rd and Westminster Dr five, and Princes Highway and Tower Rd five.
VicRoads regional director Rob Freemantle said once the council’s submission had been received, each intersection would be assessed against the AusLink Black Spot Guidelines.
He said they would also be ranked against competing proposals from other municipalities prior to submission to the Federal Government for funding consideration.
Wyndham mayor Shane Bourke said the council would lobby for action from the Black Spot funding and taking other measures at other intersections.
“However, I would urge all residents to be careful when driving to keep themselves safe,” he said.
