Those bumps in the night to go

WYNDHAM City Council will spend $12,000 to replace speed humps most of the street’s residents didn’t want.
The council installed rubber speed cushions in Wattle Street to slow speeding hoons in April.
But residents since then have complained about noise that has forced some to retreat to back bedrooms to sleep.
Councillors voted to replace the 1.9metrewide rubber cushions with less noisy 1.6m concrete ones, after several of them visited the Werribee neighbourhood to see and hear for themselves.
Tarneit Ward Cr Mark Rose said he was “amazed at the noise coming off my tyres,” especially outside Number 57.
In a report to council, senior traffic engineer Goran Bacelic said although the concrete humps the residents had preferred would cost about half the price and required less maintenance, they did not slow speeding traffic as effectively.
Wattle St resident Lou Messina said he was hopeful he could now get a good night’s rest.
Iramoo ward Cr Cynthia Manson called it a “winwin situation.” About 2800 vehicles a day use Wattle St – mostly large trucks – as a shortcut between Duncans Rd and the Princes Fwy.
The council said it would monitor the situation and review the new speed humps after three months.
