SMALL to medium businesses in the City of Maribyrnong should benefit from a Western Region Sustainability Alliance.
The alliance, launched last week, will focus on encouraging businesses to improve their operating costs and, at the same time, reduce their use of natural resources, in a project called “Grow me the money”.
The alliance includes six western metropolitan councils, Victorian Employers Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI), and the Environment Protection Authority (EPA).
Gavin Mountjoy, the council’s manager of sustainability and environment, said the project would cover a wide range of business practises.
“They can reduce material consumption, and some of that maybe to do with more recycling and producing less waste on site,” Mr Mountjoy said.
The council is already involved in sustainability projects with the business community in other initiatives and Mick Bourke, EPA chairman, said the alliance would use this knowledge.
“VECCI and the EPA want to build on the valuable experience, lessons and expertise in the West,” he said.
Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Melton and Brimbank are with the alliance.
