A TAXI driver has told of his terror when a gang of men threw rocks at his car in Werribee recently, smashing the back window and bonnet.
Mohammod Mohammod said he was driving his taxi on Sunday 5 June along Bulban Rd at around 1.30am when the incident, which he described as a “nightmare”, began.
As Mr Mohammod drove towards the Cottrell St intersection’s roundabout, a group of about seven males began tossing rocks at his vehicle.
Police said Mr Mohammod “perceived the males as being of African appearance” and have appealed for any witnesses or anyone with information about the crime to come forward.
“I also come from Africa and I have lived here almost 12 years, I am a law abiding-citizen,” Mr Mohammod said.
“They destroyed my car and I was scared, but I was lucky because I was only driving myself.
“The point is not my car, the point is the safety of the community.
“The way they threw rocks at the window, what would have happened to passengers sitting next to the window?
“If I had three people in my back seat, they would have needed to go to The Alfred Hospital with the injuries they received.”
Mr Mohammod, who has been a taxi driver since 2001, said he has been left with a bill of around $900-$1000 to fix his taxi.
“You have to repair it or else it will cost you every day it’s not on the road,” he said.
Mr Mohammod also said he was worried the men who threw rocks at his taxi could injure someone else if they were not caught.
“I could hear them yelling and laughing while they threw rocks, it is very very sad,” he said.
Mr Mohammod said some other taxi drivers have visited him since the rock-throwing incident.
“When they see my car, everyone is scared,” he said.
“I have talked to my friends and they are saying how can you go through Werribee when they are destroying and attacking taxis like this?”
