Walk the talk, says council

By Stephen Linnell
WYNDHAM residents have been asked to officially comment on the controversial Riverwalk Estate.
The council has been required to place on public display what is known as a C96 Amendment.
The proposed amendment rezones the land opposite the Princes Highway for the purpose of residential development, including a recreational and business precinct.
The State Government has forced the council’s hand by determining the proposal goes ahead – despite any plans to upgrade surrounding infrastructure including roads.
Access to Werribee via the Werribee/Cottrell Street intersection is already at bursting point.
The State Government two weeks ago announced a $1.6 million upgrade of the intersection – widely viewed as a “quick fix”.
Opponents, including lobby group Roads2Wyndham, have criticised the Government for failing to commit to more suitable long-term roadworks.
The amendment will be on public display from 31 July to 1 September. Interested parties have the ability to comment on the proposed amendment during this time.
The Riverwalk Estate will be developed by the State Government-run VicUrban.
The estate is bounded by the Princes Highway to the north and the Princes Freeway to the South, with the Werribee River and Farm Road comprising the eastern boundary.
The amendment proposes to:
• Rezone 176 hectares of land to Residential zone one;
• Rezone 2.62 hectares of land to Residential zone two (medium and higher density);
• Rezone 3.83 hectares of land to Business zone one;
• Rezone 8.13 hectares of land to Public Park and Recreation Zone.
Wyndham mayor Kim McAliney said affected residents or stakeholders must present written submissions on the amendment to the council by 1 September.
“The amendment is now on public exhibition, in accordance with recent directions from the Minister for Planning. This provides interested parties with the opportunity to comment on the proposed Amendment,” Councillor McAliney said.
“A report will be prepared for council, based on the outcomes of the submission process. If submissions remain unresolved there is a possibility the amendment will be referred to a State Government appointed panel.”
