Centre on a learning curve

By Stephen Linnell
CONSTRUCTION of one of the largest infrastructure projects in Wyndham – the $5.4 million Point Cook Community Learning Centre – has begun.
Wyndham mayor Kim McAliney was joined by Local Government Minister Richard Wynne to assist with the turning of the first sod last Thursday.
The Point Cook Community Learning Centre replaces Murnong Community Centre, which the expanding Point Cook population has outgrown.
Wyndham Council has contributed $4.3 million toward the project, with the State Government providing $1.1 million.
Facilities at the learning centre will include a 950 square metre library, community rooms, occasional care facilities, a toy library, community kitchen, two kindergarten rooms and two maternal and child health consulting rooms.
Cr McAliney said: “This is one of the most significant investments in Wyndham’s social infrastructure.
“Almost 10 per cent of Point Cook’s population is aged four or under and this facility has been constructed with this in mind.
“Not only are there maternal and child health services, kindergartens and occasional care facilities to accommodate the current population, this centre will grow with the community’s needs by providing a library and community learning rooms.”
Mr Wynne said quality community facilities were a common feature of strong and vibrant communities.
“The Brumby Government is committed to building strong local communities by supporting projects that will deliver the best results for local people,” Mr Wynne said.
“One way we do that is by providing funding to places like the Point Cook Community Learning Centre, which will be better equipped to cater for the needs of the growing community.”
The centre, at the corner of Main and Middle streets in the new Point Cook town centre, is due for completion by mid-2009.
