Design is in the detail

IT’S the detail that counts.
Hundreds of students in Wyndham and throughout Victoria have spent hours designing, sewing and stitching garments to be shown at the 2008 Myer Fashion Awards Australia.
More than 20 Victorian secondary colleges have already entered the awards show – billed as the gala fashion event of the year.
Last week, students from Werribee’s Galvin Park were putting the finishing touches to a range of garments for the show.
Five main categories will be on display: calico; “recycled wearable art”; funky day wear; cocktail; and the most popular category, the long gown.
Schools compete to win the John Claringbold Memorial School Cup and the Ross Weymouth Most Outstanding Garment Memorial Cup.
Fashion Awards Australia director Heather Marcus said interest in the evening had exceeded expectations.
Eight entries had been received from TAFE colleges, including East Gippsland, Bendigo Regional and several in Melbourne.
The awards are open to students as well as professional and amateur designers, including some from New South Wales, Mildura and Wyndham.
More than $16,000 in prizes will be awarded on the night, as well as established memorial trophies.
A special prize for the best entry from Wyndham designers will also be awarded.
The awards, now in their eighth year, will again be held at the Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre, on 15 August.
Eight judges will mark the designs prior to the evening.
Ms Marcus said professional specialist sound and lighting equipment would be used to create a “distinctive ambience and a glamorous atmosphere”.
