ENGLISH language students at Werribee Community Centre who are broadening their skills by taking catering workshops, put their talents on display last Friday as part of Harmony Day.
The centre’s Language Literacy and Numeracy Program has about 200 students.
Six of the female students began taking part in catering workshops, which were launched at the centre earlier this year.
Pauline Zurek, administration assistant at the centre, said the six women learnt how to work in a commercial kitchen.
“They prepare food for about 40 people and also wait tables,” Ms Zurek said.
“We convert the pottery room into a café, with tables and chairs, it’s really quite civil.
She added that the catering experience offers students greater scope when they look for work.
The students will also undertake a Food Safety Level 1 and 2 course in May to complement and accredit their catering skills.
Harmony Day promotes the benefits of cultural diversity and celebrates multicultural inclusiveness in the community.
It is an annual event held on 21 March.
