Giants lose season opener

AFTER missing round one in the Division One women’s baseball competition thanks to the bye, the Werribee Giants began their season on a sour note against Malvern on Saturday.
The Giants at Malvern’s Kooyong Park went down 15-4 against the home side in the round two clash.
Werribee coach Tony Culph said it was an okay performance but Malvern was the better side on the day.
A positive start in the first dig was required from the Giants but when the home side stepped up to the plate they found the gaps in the field a little too easily.
“We batted first and we got one and I thought ‘OK, we could go all right here’ and then they got four and then five (runs),” Culph said.
The Giants coach made some positional changes as the Malvern side began to increase the margin.
“I just thought with the game shot we might as well try a few things.”
Emma Pastowski took the pitching duties for the season opener but after battling a bit Culph made a rotation.
“She struggled a bit picking up the umpire’s strike zone but she did okay. Then Emma Lowe came in and did a good job.
“Emma batted all right too, she got two hits and was probably our best player on the day.
“No-one else was really outstanding but no one really played bad either, it was just one of those games where we coasted and they were just better.”
The Giants will look to Saturday’s game against baseball juggernaut Doncaster. It will be a tough ask for the Werribee side but Culph is just focusing on improvement at this stage.
“They (Doncaster) are always up there playing for the premiership, they won’t be easy.
“If we can improve on last week I hope the game will be closer this time.”
