WERRIBEE will be represented by a famous face at next year’s Australia Day celebrations.
Mark Mitchell of Con the Fruiterer fame was named as the ambassador for Werribee for our national day.
The role involves participating in citizenship ceremonies and acting in an honorary capacity.
Mr Mitchell said he was honoured to represent Werribee.
“It was a great honour,” he said.
“It’s always very humbling to be chosen for something like this.”
The staple of Australian comedy, who has featured in shows like Round The Twist, Lift Off, The Comedy Company and SeaChange, said he has fond memories of visiting Werribee as a child.
“I’ve got family connections with Werribee South,” he said.
“It was always the most exciting prospect of visiting Uncle Murray and Auntie Nancy Graham out at Werribee South.”
Deputy Premier Rob Hulls said ambassadors were an important part of official Australia Day festivities.
“They promote ideas surrounding nationhood, inclusion, diversity and excellence and I congratulate this year’s ambassadors and thank them in advance of their hard work and dedication to this important task,” he said.
Mr Mitchell said that while he still enjoys being recognised for his characters, Con the Fruiterer was not likely to make an appearance on the day.
“His first piece of advice would probably get me kicked out of the place, so I won’t be doing it as him,” he said.
