PRIMARY school students from Hoppers Crossing and their families were given a rare treat last week that allowed them to have a bit of fun while also learning about the importance of a healthy and balanced diet.
Baden Powell College’s Derrimut Heath campus looked more like a carnival than a school last Wednesday as Woolworths transformed it to teach the students about different kinds of fruit and vegetables.
A mini-market was set up featuring a range of healthy foods. The kids made rockets out of fruit and there was even a cow on site.
Suzanne Love from the school said one of the highlights was the parents being able to fill bags with as many healthy items of food as they liked and purchase them for only $5, which in turn was donated back to the school.
“It was an absolutely amazing day,” Ms Love said.
“Our teachers and parents loved it as much as the students did.”
Ms Love said while the day was a lot of fun, it was all about promoting different kinds of food to the students.
“The idea was to get the children into eating fruit and vegies that they wouldn’t usually try,” she said.
“If there was fruit that they didn’t like the look of, they could see some of the other kids trying them and they were more likely to give it a go themselves.”
