POINT Cook resident Amy Santullo is a cut above many other young hair stylists.
The 21-year-old recently won Apprentice of the Year at the Gordon Institute of TAFE in Geelong, where she is studying a Certificate 3 in Hairdressing.
Ms Santullo, who also works at Maestro Hair in Point Cook, said she was surprised her teachers selected her for the award.
“I was pretty excited, it’s nice when your hard work pays off,” she said.
Ms Santullo said she enjoyed hairdressing because it gave her the chance to be creative and design unique hairstyles.
While she has almost finished at TAFE, Ms Santullo faced an obstacle during her studies when she needed an operation to remove a dermoid cyst, which was about to rupture her ovary.
“The hard part was you couldn’t lift anything for a few months afterwards, because they cut your stomach muscles,” Ms Santullo said.
This was a challenge for someone who wields scissors and hairdryers on a daily basis.
However since then, Ms Santullo has been working hard to achieve her ambition of becoming a session stylist.
She has been working with friends, a photographer and a make-up artist, to shoot fashion pictures to build up her portfolio.
Last Tuesday, along with other staff from Maestro Hair, she also did the hair of models at a fashion show in Melbourne.
The multi-talented young woman also likes making hats and fascinators, and hopes to study millinery in the future.
