A WERRIBEE business is taking a unique approach to bring more customers in the door and sending a powerful message of acceptance along the way.
Wyncity Bowl and Entertainment have started a ladies only bowling league with a twist, everyone participating needs to be either gay or gay-friendly.
Doriana Porto from the bowling alley said that the idea came about when they realised there was a shortage of women taking part in the sport.
“We discovered that most of our evening bowling sessions were filled with men, and being that we’re four women that run the place, we started to think about how we could get more women walking through the doors,” Ms Porti said.
“We went for the angle of the lesbian market because we wanted people to know that bowling is a really inclusive sport and that anyone can do it.”
While only one of the nights has been held so far, Ms Porti said she was keen to restart the initiative soon.
“Hopefully if we are really persistent with it and we just keep on pushing, then the penny will drop,” she said.
“We’re hoping that through this people might be more accepting more tolerant and more understanding of people in general.”
Ms Porti said that bowling was already a more inclusive sport than some other mainstream ones, but this was the first time that she was aware of an event being targeted at the lesbian community.
