IF it wasn’t for the Werribee Concert Band, Mat Taylor’s musical future would be grim.
“I’d probably have given up music in year 12 and started drinking beer and chasing girls,” the 23-year-old Werribee local said.
Joining the band 11 years ago, the musical director and trumpet player is proud to be part of the 25th anniversary celebrations for the iconic community band.
Having grown up and completed his education in Werribee, Mat says maintaining close connection to the community has been a vital part of his job.
“For me, being apart of the band is about giving back what you have taken from the community and a lot of us have learned a lot from Werribee,” he said.
“I’m a really big believer in music and people who want to pursue music as a career”.
For the past two months the 35 strong instrumental band – which members span from nine to 75-years-old – have been preparing for their 13 August Gala held at the Wyndham Events Centre.
Over the years the personal growth of Mat’s band members continues to fuel his passion for teaching and learning about music.
“My job isn’t about gigging every Saturday night, it’s about watching that nine year-old grow into an 18 year-old who can play a musical instrument. That’s what it’s about for me,” Mat added.
The band has previously played at the Relay for Life and Moomba festivals and the Werribee Watton St night market.
Working with some of Australia’s finest jazz musicians in his career, Mat ensures his band mates are not in the industry for the fame, but to provide an entertaining performance for their audience.
“It’s never been about meeting famous people… it’s about working together as a team and getting to know the people you will play with and play for.”
The Werribee Concert Band will rehearse for their anniversary gala at the Werribee Open Range Zoo on Sunday 31 July between 11am and 1pm. For information visit: www.werribeeconcertband.com.
