Late surge gives Werribee victory

WERRIBEE defeated Corio 17.9 (111) to 14.12 (98) in the Geelong and District Football League in windy conditions at Shell Oval on Saturday. After kicking the first three goals in less than five minutes, Werribee looked to be on its way to a big win. But Corio fought back and scored the last six goals of the quarter to build an 18-point lead. Centrals continued to struggle at the beginning of the second quarter until a 50-metre penalty to Brendan Chugg, which resulted in a goal, changed the momentum of the game. Werribee began to make inroads and kicked seven second-quarter goals to go into half time with a six-point lead. The second half was closely contested. Both backlines performed well and made it hard for opposition forwards to score. Eventually Werribee broke through the Corio defence and kicked away with six last quarter goals to seal the win. Nathan Lovell proved to be the difference between the sides after he was moved forward. He took a number of contested marks and kicked four goals. Craig Rosenzweig also contributed well, kicking seven goals in a welcome return to form.

CENTRALS could not make it another win in the reserves, losing a close match by 10 points to Corio and will now struggle to qualify for finals. The final score was Corio 10.2 (62) to Werribee 7.10 (52).

IT was a disappointing weekend for Werribee in the Big V basketball competition. The men’s division one side was defeated by three points in a nail-biting clash with Chelsea. The match was locked at 63 apiece after the fourth term as the teams were forced into overtime. Chelsea was able to make the most of its free throw opportunities, scoring nine out of 10 from the line, to clinch the win 68-65.
IN the women’s Big V division two clash, Werribee has been convincingly beaten by top-of-the-ladder Keilor, 81-27. Keilor, which has only lost twice for the season, got the off to a good start and never looked back, winning every term. The Werribee defence could not limit the scoring capacity of Keilor’s Nala Tubb who scored 18 points and had 11 rebounds for the match. Lauren Olcorn played well for Werribee, with 10 and having seven rebounds. The next best Werribee scorer was Sarah McKay, who shot five points. The leaves Werribee in ninth position on the Big V ladder. Next week they take on fifth placed Mckinnon.

WERRIBEE’S State League Three hockey side held top team Old Xavierians to a 2-2 draw on Saturday. Old Xavierians really turned on a fast and furious pace to begin the game but the youth of Werribee stood toe-to-toe with them, with a great deflection from Joshua Pace on an attacking penalty corner putting Werribee on the scoreboard. In the second term Werribee move the ball around well to force Old Xaverians to defend desperately. Max Evans placed the ball past the Old Xaverians keeper in a short corner but was disallowed the goal. This fired Old Xaverians up and they pressed every ball and pass Werribee made, which forced the turnover and resulted in a goal to give Old Xaverians a 2-1 lead. But a late goal from leading goal scorer Luke Simpson tied the game up again.
