WYNDHAM residents have slammed the safety of Wyndham’s largest train station, saying that a lack of emergency buttons is putting passenger’s lives at risk.
Well-known local activist John Brodel said that he had been contacting both the State Government and Metro regularly asking them to improve the safety.
Platform three at the station has no emergency buttons, clocks or information screens showing when the next train will arrive.
“The safety of passengers is being compromised,” Mr Brodel said.
“There is no emergency response system. It’s completely unacceptable.”
Minister for Public Transport, Terry Mulder, said that Labor failed to improve safety at the station in 11 years and that platform three was rarely used.
“The use of (the platform) one by suburban trains is usually on weekday mornings. It is almost unknown on weekday afternoons weeknights or weekends,” Mr Mulder said.
“The Coalition Government staffs Werribee railway station from first to last train. These station staff are in the subway booking office which is a quick walk from Werribee station’s three platforms. The station staff will always assist passengers.
“Nonetheless, I have asked the Department of Transport to provide me with detailed advice regarding the provision of improved infrastructure for Werribee’s platform three.”
Mr Mulder said both platforms one and two had emergency call buttons and eventually Protective Services Officers would be present at the station.
