A TARNEIT teacher has been recognised for her tireless work in the community.
Samiya Kirat from Kids Heaven Family Daycare in Tarneit was honoured this month with a local Educator of the Year award.
Ms Kirat came to Australia in 1984 after moving from Ethiopia to Egypt as a refugee.
The dedicated teacher said she was shocked to discover she had been nominated for the award by parents of her students.
“I was just so surprised by this, it’s too much,” Ms Kirat said.
“Being nominated by the parents is great because it means that we are doing something right. I feel like I am part of their family.”
Ms Kirat, who has lived in Tarneit for the past eight years, said it had always been her dream to become a teacher.
“It is my passion, I always wanted to work with children,” she said.
“These are the critical years of their education and I just teach them to experience life.
“It’s nice to feel like you are making a difference and to be recognised.
“I just want to thank all the children and their parents for nominating me for this award.”
