Bottles thrown at cops

POLICE closed down a Laverton party after they used capsicum spray to break up a fight at the event.
Inspector Glenn Mayne said officers were called to a hall in Triholm Crescent on Friday 6 July and arrived at around 10.55 pm.
“There were a number of young people in the hall, which had been rented, and initially police turned up with a view to see what was going on,” he said.
“A number of bottles thrown at the police vehicle but no officers were injured.”
Insp Mayne said police were called by partygoers concerned a fight at the event was getting out of hand.
He said the attending officers called for back-up after the bottles were thrown at their vehicle.
“They called for added assistance and the fight ended up continuing, and the officers deployed OC (capsicum) spray,” he said.
“Police physically broke up the fight and ended up closing the party down and had a significant number of units attend.”
Members from the Victoria Police Public Order Response Team also helped close down the party.
“It took about 15 minutes for people to disperse to our satisfaction,” Insp Mayne said.
“Police are obviously very disappointed that this party was held without police being notified and the council had no idea what was going on as well.”
As of last Wednesday, no one had been charged in relation to the fight but the investigation was continuing.
Insp Mayne said police were also investigating another brawl which occurred in Watton St in Werribee.
“At the moment we haven’t got a lot of information, there were a number of people involved in an altercation and police are looking for independent witnesses,” he said.
