Major drug swoop

WYNDHAM police raided nine houses in four days in Tarneit and Truganina, taking more than $6 million worth of cannabis off the streets.
Members from the Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit, Wyndham Tasking Unit, Werribee and Wyndham North Police Stations and the Major Drug Task Force raided five houses in Truganina last Tuesday and seized about 600 cannabis plants.
The raids follow on from similar ones conducted on four houses in Tarneit on Saturday 14 July where about 800 plants were located.
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Nick Barbounis from the Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit said two people were facing court over last week’s raids.
“Six people initially came back to the station to assist us with our inquiries and two of them were remanded in custody to face the Melbourne Magistrates Court today (Wednesday 18 July),” Det Acting Sen Sgt Barbounis told Star.
“This operation is the result of recent information that has come to hand and local police have acted quickly on that information.”
Following the seizure of the 800 plants in Tarneit a 31-year-old Deer Park man was arrested and faced court several days later.
Det Acting Sen Sgt Barbouris could not confirm if the same man was connected to last week’s raids.
“Our investigation will be ongoing and our detectives will look into possible connections further,” he said.
“This is one of the most significant seizures of late and it’s going to have a very large impact on the illegal drug scene.
“It’s an absolutely fantastic result for local police to be able to take these drugs off the streets.”
