WERRIBEE Districts proved no match for the University Blacks on Saturday, going down by 89 points in round 12 of the Victorian Amateur Football Association.
University got away to a flying start to open up a 22-point lead at the first break however was helped by Werribee’s inaccuracy in front of the big sticks.
There was no coming back for Werribee with the margin rapidly increasing throughout the afternoon as University steamed to the win, 16.15 (111) to 2.10 (22).
Adam Alifraco and Stefan Callea were the only goal scorers for the Districts while Lachlan Patterson was named best on ground.
The result sees Werribee fall to seventh on the Premier B ladder with a 4-8 win/loss record this season.
The players will be looking to bounce back this weekend when they take on sixth placed Old Haileybury at the Soldiers Reserve.
DEER Park coasted to an impressive 61-point win over Hoppers Crossing on Saturday in the Western Region Football League.
Daniel Nelson was a star for Deer Park, booting four majors to be the leading goal scorer on the ground.
He was well supported by Dean Stankovic, Teghan Henderson, Sam Maitland and Luke Summers who also contributed as multiple goal scorers.
Scoring wasn’t as easy to come by for the Warriors, who kicked just one goal in the first quarter and none in the third quarter as the Deer Park defence proved too strong.
Despite the loss, Scott Greenhough worked hard and was named best on ground for Hoppers Crossing in the 17.12 (114) to 7.11 (53) loss.
The Warriors now sit third on the WRFL ladder and will take on seventh placed St Albans this week while Deer Park will meet Sunshine.
ROUND 20 of the Footscray Cycling Club’s Winter Road Season was held around the Kirksbridge circuit with birthday boy Dom Dudkiewicz giving himself a present by taking out the A-Grade race.
Early in the contest Ben Johnson upped the pace and put riders into the gutter in an attempt to break up the field. At this time Geelong rider Eric Holt took a nasty fall after his handlebars snapped with veteran rider Bob Shannon and international Malaysian rider Muhammed Suardi both crashing out in the aftermath.
After the front bunch of Dudkiewicz, Johnson, Jason Costin, Tom Paton, Miles DaCosta and Ben O’Leary waited a little while for any riders to catch the remaining riders. They swapped turns at a high pace for the next few laps with Johnson attacking on the last lap and Dudkiewicz bridging across. The pair established a 200-metre lead with Dudkiewicz taking the sprint from Johnson and Jason Costin taking the bunch sprint and third place.
A DOMINANT first quarter was enough to see Werribee storm to an impressive 24-point win in the Men’s Division One Big V basketball on Sunday.
The Devils were at their brilliant best early in the contest, scoring 31 points in the first quarter and maintaining that level throughout the clash on their way to the 91-67 win.
Jordan Hughes continued what has been an outstanding year scoring 22 points and winning seven rebounds to be one of the Devils’ best players. He was well supported by Muka Silver (17) and Cirkook Riak (11) in an even scoring performance across the board.
The result further strengthens Werribee’s place on top of the Terril pool ladder, with the Devils holding an eight-point advantage over second placed Mildura.
In the final round of the home and away season this week they will meet Whittlesea.
The news wasn’t as good for the Werribee women’s team who fell to Melbourne University 69-46.
