WYNDHAM’S refugee communities are in less danger thanks to an award winning local program.

At the 2012 Fire Awareness Awards held last week the Wyndham Community and Education Centre was recognised for its Fire Safety Presentations for Refugees program.

Kathy Brunton from the Wyndham Community and Education Centre said the project made a difference to the refugee community who haven’t had emergency services available to them.

“They just don’t know the risks. Our project literally saved four lives in an incident – if that’s all

we do in our lives then we’re happy,” Ms Brunton said.

“We’re very proud of our award. Everyone here is very excited and showing off our trophy.”

The Fire Awareness Awards recognise the extraordinary work of people, groups and organisations in their efforts to reduce the number and effects of fire in Victoria.

CFA Chief Officer Euan Ferguson said this year’s record number of entries in the awards showed the great work being done across the state to enhance fire awareness and safety that can reduce incidences and impact of fire.

“For many of these people, carrying out these projects is not part of their job. They are volunteers or community groups dedicating their time to improving fire safety, preparedness, response and recovery,” Mr Euan said.
