Keep pets safe

By XAVIER SMERDON

With fireworks exploding, Christmas lights flashing and plenty of social gatherings happening during the festive season, Wyndham Council is reminding pet owners to make sure their pets are kept safe.
Councillor Bob Fairclough said ensuring pets are registered and microchipped and their details are up to date, while keeping them in a safe and secure place are the best ways to stop pets from escaping during the festive season.
The council recommended pet owners to take their dogs for a long walk the day that fireworks are likely to be set off and keep dogs inside if they are known to get scared of loud noises.
“Wyndham’s pound often experiences a surge in lost pets during the festive season,” Cr Fairclough said.
“By keeping your pet safe and secure, ensuring they are microchipped and registered with their correct details and being aware of any scheduled fireworks or parties in your neighbourhood, you could save yourself heartache.
“The festive season also brings with it warm weather and trips away. I would encourage pet owners to ensure their pets are looked after with plenty of cool water during days of extreme heat and ask a neighbour, friend or relative to provide food and water if you are travelling.
“Wyndham City has a number of programs and services designed to make responsible pet ownership easier, including pet microchipping days, the online lost animal register and the Pet Expo. Our website also features a range of tips on ways to care for your pets.”
