RACING returned to Werribee on Sunday for the highly anticipated Kids Day Out.
In the first meeting since December’s Werribee Cup, punters sunk their teeth into an eight-race card with quality horses and jockeys ensuring a hotly contested afternoon of racing.
Junior racegoers enjoyed a number of on-course activities throughout the day, which included face painting, badge making, crazy hair decorating, mask making and jumping castles.
Werribee Racing Club general manager Ross Kendell said the day was a huge success.
“We had a lot more people than I was expecting,” he said.
“People started arriving early. The first race wasn’t until 11 o’clock but we had people rolling up a couple of hours before that.
“There were lots of families and lots of kids out who were keen to have a really enjoyable day. We had a broad range of kids’ activities out on the lawn. The kids just really revelled in that. That side of it was fantastic and to have that many people on course from really early in the day was just tremendous.”
Winners during the day included Magnaro ($6), You Can Dance ($3.80), Miss Godden ($6.30) and High Moment ($3.50).
There will be no slowing down for the Werribee Racing Club with plans already well underway for the Australia Day long weekend race meeting on Sunday 27 January.
Members dining packages as well as a huge “Aussie barbeCue” on the front lawn will be available on the day and Kendell encouraged all racegoers to come along.
“I think people who attend and take advantage of that will have a tremendous day,” he said.
