POINT Cook has wasted no time making itself at home in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association.
After moving its first and second XI sides from the Williamstown and District Cricket Association in the off-season, the Warriors have lost just one match at the halfway point of the season and sit in outright second place on the West B1 ladder.
Club president Joe Polzella is rapt with the start his club has made to the season with the second XI also appearing to be finals bound.
“We have a couple more experienced blokes in the team this year who are good first XI players and a couple of younger kids have matured as well and are starting to play good cricket which is great to see,” he said.
“A combination of all those things has contributed to the strength of the first two teams overall which has been great.
“There are still four games to go so it is going to be a good lead up into what will hopefully be finals for us.”
David Hicks has been a standout with the bat for the Warriors, posting a classy 81 to start the season against Sunshine Heights before backing that performance up the next week with 104 against Avondale Heights.
With the ball, Jason Denton has led the charge, taking 14 wickets from six matches including best figures of 5/30 in round four.
Polzella said, leading in, he wasn’t sure what to expect from the club’s first season in the VTCA.
“At the end of the day we were new to the VTCA playing our first year in the competition so we really just wanted to wait and see,” he said.
“Until you actually get out there and play a few games you just don’t know what to expect. For our ones to be second and our seconds to be on top, we are obviously very pleased with where we are at for the moment.
“We have had some good coaches who have come on board and some good players have joined us and the kids have stepped up and it has come together. We are pleasantly surprised with the results at the moment which is good.”
In further good news for the club, the Warriors are expecting to move into their new playing complex at Salt Water Reserve by the end of January.
