THE Werribee Cricket Club possesses arguably the strongest batting line-up in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association and leading the charge is Tim O’Brien.
After signing with the Tigers in the lead-up to the 2012/13 season, the gun all-rounder hasn’t missed a beat, as he has set about dominating opposition teams.
O’Brien is averaging 85 with the bat and has amassed two brilliant hundreds to sit fourth on the overall competition run scorers list.
However, a good year got even better earlier this month when O’Brien wrote his name into the Werribee Cricket Club record books by blasting the highest score by any Tigers first XI batsman in the club’s history.
O’Brien reached 183 not out against Moorabbin, after coming to the crease with his side in trouble at 2/38.
The man of the moment didn’t know he had broken the record at the time but said he and fellow batsman Matthew Dean had just set each other the goal of batting until the tea break.
“When I came in we were two for 30-odd and it was just important that we, first of all got through that stage to that first drinks break,” he said.
“From there we just said that we wanted to get through until tea. That was pretty much the goal throughout.
“I thought my best knock for the season was probably against Elsternwick … but as far as hitting the ball, that was probably the best this year.”
It is not just with the bat that O’Brien has dominated opposition sides. He has also taken 19 wickets throughout the season, including multiple victims in eight of his 11 matches.
Werribee club president Ivo Havard said Tim had been the perfect addition to the club.
“He has had as good a season as anyone in the competition with his bowling and batting,” Havard said.
“He has just been a super pick up for us and fitted in beautifully. He has all the credentials that you look for with representative cricket and Premier cricket.
“There is no doubt about it, Tim O’Brien has been a winner for the Werribee Cricket Club and hopefully the Werribee Cricket Club has been a good thing for Tim O’Brien.”
After finishing 10th in 2011/12, the Tigers sit in second place on the VSDCA ladder, trailing top of the table Melton by just 0.2 per cent.
The Tigers also sit in fourth place in the overall club championship award.
