Building a community

HOPPERS Crossing students will have a chance to mould their community as they help design and construct a children’s playground.
Students from Hoppers Crossing Secondary College have been invited to take part in the project which will form part of residential community Forsyth Park’s central precinct.
As part of the project, students will look to other best practice playground designs from around Australia before planning, designing and choosing the equipment for the playground, as well as crafting one of the pieces themselves using wood and carpentry skills.
The year-long project will also see the students oversee the plant selection and delivery of the playground, providing them with invaluable access into the planning, construction and development industries.
Forsyth Park development manager, Sean Hogan from ISPT, said the project was a fantastic opportunity for students to get a taste of what goes on behind closed doors in construction and design.
“We are delighted to offer these students from Hoppers Crossing Secondary College the opportunity to be involved in such a huge project right from the outset,” Mr Hogan said.
“We think the project will provide the students with invaluable experience and knowledge into how the planning, design, construction and landscaping industries all weave in together to build new communities from the ground up.
“We will be treating the students as we would any other contractors by providing them with a brief and budget and we are excited to see what they can create for this central park precinct.”
Hoppers Crossing Secondary College VCAL coordinator, Jessica Stone said the park project was one of the largest year-long projects her VCAL students had ever embarked on.
“We are thrilled to be involved in such a wonderful project at Forsyth Park and our students are all very keen to get started on their ideas for the design,” Ms Stone said.
