AMY Cashin is enjoying a dream start to 2013. After an outstanding performance at the National Selection Trials the Werribee resident qualified to represent Australia at the World Junior Athletics Championships in cross-country.
But the good results don’t stop there.
The 18-year-old also secured herself a State Title at the State Youth Athletics Championships earlier this month.
Competing in the 1500 metre event, Cashin posted the fastest time of any female athlete across all age groups en route to the Under 20 Women’s Title.
With her busy schedule set to continue, the young champion is in the midst of a tough training regime, which she hopes will give her an edge over her rivals.
“For my training I am running between 60kms and 80kms per week,” she said.
“Sometimes I will go for a 15km run and other times it is just shorter reps.
“When I race it is generally between four and eight kms. The World Junior Championships race is a 6km race and I like that distance at the moment, it seems to be working for me.”
Cashin also thanked members of the Western Athletics Club and her coach Peter Burke for their support of her achievements on the track. Long term, the Werribee Secondary College student has her eyes set on reaching the top of her sport.
“In the future I would love to make an Australian senior team,” she said.
“I will head off into the senior category next year or the year after. I would also love to try and go for a Commonwealth Games team and eventually, in the long run, even an Olympic team if I could possibly achieve that.”
For her outstanding sporting achievements Cashin has been named this month’s Don Deeble Rising Star nominee.
The award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with the Star News Group.
Amy will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in his future sporting goals.
The Don Deeble Rising Star Award recognises young athletes in the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at a state and national level.
