WOMEN from across Wyndham are being encouraged to push their men out of the shed and give woodwork and metalwork a try for themselves.
On Monday 4 March the Heathdale and Neighbours Community Shed in Werribee will be celebrating International Women’s Day.
They will be hosting Women’s Own Day, a free event, which will feature everything from hands-on wood and metal workshops to bicycle, home and car maintenance tips.
Councillor Marie Brittan said the day is an ideal opportunity for women to make friends and learn some new skills.
“Members of the Kookaburra Girls and the Men’s Shed programs will be running demonstrations and hand-on workshops on gardening advice as well as pyrography, the art of making a design through wood burning,” Cr Brittan said.
“Women can also find out information about a range of services, talk to shed staff and volunteers and enjoy a free lunch along with activities and displays from The Body Shop, Werribee Support and Housing, Zonta, New Hope Foundation, Iramoo Community Centre, Country Women’s Association and ISIS Primary Care.”
Cr Brittan said Wyndham was synonymous with powerful women and International Women’s Day was the perfect opportunity to celebrate that.
“Women hold some of the top jobs in Wyndham and provide great leadership role models for residents. We have a female CEO, a female Mayor, and a female Federal MP who is also the Prime Minister, so there are many reasons Wyndham should be proud of the contribution our women are making,” she said.
Women’s Own Day will be held from 9am to 1pm on Monday 4 March at Heathdale and Neighbours Community Shed and Wyndham Park Community Centre, 57 and 57A Kookaburra Drive, Werribee.
Interpreters and childcare will be available on the day.
