A HUSBAND and wife team have ditched their jobs in the information technology and interior design industries for a much colder workplace.
Kosta Nicolaou and Janelle Mammarella spent almost two years testing different flavours undergoing market research before launching their own gelato business in Werribee just weeks ago.
Popculture Pops is the combination of Janelle’s Italian heritage with the couple’s love for shaking things up.
“The inspiration came from wanting to create something nostalgic but deliver it in a fun and modern way,” Mr Nicolaou said.
“We wanted to create something traditional but in a different kind of fashion.”
In just a few short weeks there Werribee-made gelato pops are already being sold in five different locations from Seddon all the way to Prahran.
“It’s really taken off and they are really selling well considering that people still need to learn about our brand,” Mr Nicolaou said.
“It’s difficult to say who our target market is because we find that everyone likes it even if they are aged five or 80.”
Even though the business is expanding at a rapid rate, Janelle and Kosta still do everything by themselves from creating new flavours to making the gelato pops and packing and delivering them.
The range of flavours is another way the couple has decided to change an old tradition.
While they still offer well known flavours like pistachio, they have since created flavours as different as Peanut Butter Jelly Time and Corn.
