Long hour of play

ONE hour of cricket was all that was played at Bryan Martyn Oval this weekend after rain heavily restricted Williamstown Imperials and Wyndhamvale in the WDCA’s A1 Turf grand final.
On Saturday the ground in Newport was deemed unplayable as rain lashed the area, and upon inspection ahead of Sunday’s action the surface had still not recovered, delaying the start of play by four hours for an eventual 5pm start.
The match that started two weeks ago (9 March) will resume this Saturday after Wyndhamvale only managed to convert its 2/24 into 4/83 by Sunday evening.
Despite that the scoreboard still has Wyndhamvale in the box seat after opening batsman Andrew Ford (112) and Lee Veal (62) both made handy contributions with the bat.
Their response of 244 in an almost 88-over dig gave Wyndhamvale an 85-run buffer over Williamstown Imperials, who made 159 in their first innings.
As it currently stands Wyndhamvale has a 168-run lead after facing 38 overs in its second innings.
Weather permitting, a strong day in the middle on Saturday should ensure victory, but Williamstown Imperials will be keen to avenge the heartbreak of 12 months earlier, when they went down to West Newport in the decider.
