Young readers in Wyndham will join thousands of other young Victorians in the 2013 Premiers’ Reading Challenge.
The Premiers’ Reading Challenge is set to introduce youngsters to reading a range of books.
It will encourage students to read a minimum number of books by 12 September 2013, including many from a recommended reading list.
Member for Western Metropolitan Region Andrew Elsbury said the Victorian Coalition Government has provided over $90,000 so that the Wyndham, Hume, Moonee Valley and Brimbank City Councils could buy hundreds of books to help local people meet the challenge.
Wyndham has received the most amounts of funds given to any other western suburbs council.
A total of $26,490 was given to the council to buy more books to accommodate for the challenge.
“It’s all about getting kids into reading and getting the knowledge you can get out of that particular pursuit,” Mr Elsbury said.
The challenge is for pre-schoolers up to year 10 students, with a different number of minimum books for each grade level.
“Reading is quiet an important part of growing up and building younger people’s imaginations,” Mr Elsbury said.
Each person to take part in the challenge will receive a certificate and have their name on the honour roll on the website.
