WERRIBEE’S unbeaten run in Big V Division Two women’s basketball continued with a win against Coburg on Saturday night.
The Devils went into the clash undefeated after five games, and were again impressive on their home court against one of their main threats in the division, winning 62-58 after a slow start to the game.
Coach Lloyd Klaman was happy to get the win over the bigger and more experienced Coburg outfit.
“It was good because Coburg was always going to be a tough team to beat,” Klaman explained.
“They’re an older, more mature team with big bodies, and probably the biggest, strongest team in the league.
“It was kind of an ugly game but we got over the line.”
Werribee eased its way into the game throughout the first half and trailed by just two points at halftime.
However a dominant third quarter turned the game on its head and in the Devils’ favour, to outscore the visitors 18-11.
“The key for us was midway through the third quarter, when we went on a 15 to nothing run,” Klaman said.“It gave us that buffer to get home – and that’s two games in a row now where at some point we’ve just flicked the switch and went on with it.”
Such inconsistency between quarters has remained one constant in Werribee’s season to date that Klaman hopes to eradicate soon.
Against Coburg, it was the shooting of his more experienced charges that let the Devils down on Saturday night.
“It was our worst shooting game of the year,” Klaman said.
“We didn’t shoot very well and we started very slow but in the second half we played really hard.
“Morgan Owen had a great game, especially in the second half. She shot the ball well and did everything for us, really, to tell you the truth.”
Owen’s 19 points was a game-high, while Lisa Troyahn battled hard with 10 points and 11 rebounds on the night.
Meanwhile Werribee’s men didn’t fare so well on the road against the Diamond Valley Eagles on Sunday.
The Devils never recovered from a shocking opening term, ultimately going down 95-81 to go 3-3 for the season.
