WYNDHAM residents who are unable to walk their dogs due to ill health, old age, impairment or disability, are being encouraged to take advantage of a free service.
Wyndham Council’s Dog Walking Program allows volunteers to take dogs, whose owners may not be able to walk them regularly, for short trips to keep them healthy.
Cr Peter Maynard encouraged people with dogs to sign up to the program.
“The program provides dogs with the daily exercise and socialisation they need to stay healthy and happy,” Cr Maynard said.
“Without someone to walk their dog, elderly people or people with disabilities can be forced to give up a much loved pet. Dogs are an important part of our lives but, like all of us, they need to stay active and that’s why this program is so important.”
Wyndham Vale resident Peter Sharp has been a volunteer with the program for five years and has become close with 14-year-old terrier Ruby, which he regularly walks for an elderly couple.
“My wife and I had a dog for many years, which we lost, but we also wanted to give something back to the community, so that’s why we got involved with the Dog Walking Program,” Mr Sharp said.
“Over the years, I’ve taught Ruby to stop and sit at crossings and we’ve developed a real connection with one another. Both Ruby and her owners greet me like one of the family these days.”
