The men of Wyndham will round up at the Men’s Shed to celebrate men’s health next week.
The Werribee Men’s Shed at Heathdale and Neighbourhood Community Shed will host Men’s Health Week as part of a range of other activities held at the shed.
The shed offers an environment for men who are 18 years and over to meet new people and work on different projects.
They can enjoy keeping busy in the different areas of the shed which include the welding room, woodwork room, bicycle workshop and the gardening area.
Secretary Tamara Wright said it is especially important for men who are no longer in the work force.
“One of the issues men in our society face is depression after losing a job, long term unemployment, retirement, and injury and this is mostly due to a lack of purpose and little to no social interaction,” Ms Wright said.
“The Men’s Shed is a wonderful place,” she said.
“And there is a wonderful camaraderie developed by men who attend the shed.”
Member Reece Smith said being part of the Men’s Shed has changed him.
“I wasn’t getting out of bed in the morning and I wasn’t feeling the best,” Mr Smith said.
“I came down here and it only took me a couple of days to know this is where I want to be when I’m not working,” he said.
“It’s men working with other men side by side and that’s what makes them and I’ve got some friendships here that I really hadn’t had before.”
The men are involved in a bunch of community service projects like working with local schools.
“It’s part of what makes the Men Shed so good, voluntarism and doing good projects for people, it makes a difference,” Mr Smith said.
“And it made a difference in my life.”
“All we have to do is open the door and let people in and the magic happens.”
The Men’s Shed Open Day will be on 11 June from 9am to noon with more activities on 13 June. For more information call 8742 6448 or email hna.shed@hotmail.com.
