HE MAY share a name with the baddest man in town, but Leroy Brown is all about doing good in the community.
The Wyndham Vale resident hosts the morning radio show on K-ROCK FM in Geelong and is hoping to cover one of the town’s landmarks in blankets.
Several years ago he attempted to live on the streets of Geelong for five days to raise awareness for the issue, but threats to his safety forced him to cancel his plans after only two days.
Last year he decided to tackle the issue again by calling on residents to donate blankets to cover the floor of the local basketball stadium.
A total of 868 blankets were collected and donated to the Salvation Army.
Later this month he will be attempting to take his idea to a new level by covering the Geelong Pier in blankets.
The radio station will also be holding an outdoor broadcast from 6 to 9am on the day to coincide with the event.
“Obviously it’s cold out there at the moment and the figures are pretty disturbing,” Mr Brown said.
“There are about 40 people living on the streets in Geelong at the moment, which is pretty alarming when you think about the weather we’re experiencing.”
Mr Brown said the blankets would also go towards other disadvantaged people who could not afford to keep themselves warm.
Blanket Geelong, as the event is known, will be held on 21 June at the Geelong Pier.
