WERRIBEE South has the potential to be a major tourist attraction, but Wyndham Council needs to come on board to make it happen, according to ratepayers.
President of the Ratepayers of Werribee South, Marisa Berton, made a submission to the council last week regarding its draft city plan for 2013-2017.
In her submission Ms Berton urged the council create a Foreshore Strategy Plan for Werribee South.
Ms Berton, who has lived in Werribee South for 15 years, said with projects like the Wyndham Harbour and East Werribee Employment Precinct on the way, the area will need more than just a “maintenance budget”.
“I see a lot of potential for this area and I see it as a possible region,” Ms Berton said.
“We need to put the ground work in now though, before it goes too far the wrong way.”
Ms Berton said she saw the area becoming a hub for art studios, cafes and weekend markets.
She also wanted to see partnerships between schools and farms so that students could learn about how the food they eat makes its way onto their plates.
“I really believe we are coming to a point in time where the farming community, residents, and the tourism industry are all coming together,” she said.
“We are about to blend the three in one area, and we’ve never had to think of this before.”
The council has until 1 July to notify Ms Berton of their decision on whether or not to include her submission in their next city plan.
