IT WILL be lights, cameras and action in Wyndham later this month when a filmmaker of international fame comes to the municipality.
Bobby Galinsky rose to prominence in the 1980s when he co-wrote Flatliners starring Kiefer Sutherland and Julia Roberts and Kevin Bacon.
For a period, everyone wanted to know the man from a small town in Iowa, which he describes as “probably the Werribee of America”.
But an unintentional break from the movie business forced Mr Galinsky to take stock of his career and he eventually moved to Australia, settling in Elwood.
He is currently filming a $40 million movie called Dust and Glory and a $14 million biopic about the former INXS front man Michael Hutchence.
This Saturday he will hold a one-off class in Werribee to share his industry secrets.
“Some of my favourite young actors are from the Werribee and Tarneit areas,” Mr Galinsky said.
“I think growing up in an area like that you have really good family values and a lot of expectations.
“If you have everything handed to you then you can’t handle the rejection.”
Mr Galinksy said he wanted to create a sense of inspiration in people who attended his class.
“I like getting people to unlock their own potential and then go out there and make their own project, not to wait for 20 years for something to happen,” he said.
“I see so many talented kids out there in Werribee and they haven’t been jaded by years of bad interviews yet.”
In an interesting twist of fate, the often maligned Australian film industry is what gave Mr Galinsky a steady career.
“As far as I’m concerned Australia will be the next Hollywood in 10 years’ time.”
Mr Galisnky’s class will be held at Screen Actors Australia in Werribee on Saturday 20 July. For more information visit www.screenactors.com.au
