THIS weekend Wyndham residents are being encouraged to celebrate National Tree Day by stepping outside and connecting with nature.
Residents can also help improve the local environment by planting trees along the banks of the Werribee River.
Councillor Peter Gibbons said local organisers were looking for 150 volunteers to plant 1500 natives along the banks of the river.
“We’ll be planting local native plants which have adapted over a long period of time to Wyndham’s specific conditions and will thrive here,” Cr Gibbons said.
Last year more than one million native trees, shrubs and grasses were planted at more than 3300 sites around Australia.
“National Tree Day helps us do something positive for the environment and reconnect with nature,” Cr Gibbons said.
“It’s a great opportunity for community members of all ages to get involved in an important environmental project.”
The planting event will take part along the Werribee River, near Riverbend Historical Park in Werribee from 10 am to midday on Sunday 28 July.
“The Werribee River is a wonderful part of our city, it’s really the jewel in Wyndham’s crown and these plants will not only beautify the river but also provide more shady trees and important habitat for native wildlife,” Cr Gibbons said.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own gloves.
A light lunch will be provided afterwards.
