Three strikes rule

WYNDHAM City Council has rejected the proposal of a three-storey apartment development on Tarneit Rd in Hoppers Crossing.
The building which was to house 30 dwellings and a car park at No.617 Tarneit Rd, Hopper Crossing, was not granted a permit at an ordinary council meeting last Monday.
Councillors agreed that Tarneit Rd was not the ideal location for the new development.
Chaffey Ward Councillor Shane Bourke said the proposal was an overdevelopment of the block.
“The reality is the density and height was too high having so many of them on that land,” Cr Bourke said.
The proposal was rejected on nine separate grounds including that it did not comply with the objectives and requirements of the Tarneit and Sayers Road Neighbourhood Character Investigation Area, Final Report.
“The other main thing with it is that it doesn’t comply with so many parts of the Clause 55 (ResCode) of the Wyndham Planning Scheme,” Cr Bourke said.
Cr Bourke said the 30 dwellings would not have fit well within the neighbourhood.
“People who move to those large blocks move there for a quality of life that they desired,” Cr Bourke said.
“They were never to know that a block near them would end up potentially having a development like that,” he said.
“They would have thought it would be a single home like they have.”
The development would have also affected the congestion and traffic on the already busy Tarneit Rd.
“The traffic is chaotic at the best of times, so adding potentially another 60 cars would just impact on that general amenity so greatly,” Cr Bourke said.
