WERRIBEE is looking to get back into the Bowls Victoria Pennant Competition Premier Division as quickly as possible.
After a tough run on the greens, the Bees were relegated at the end of last season.
Although the club has lost talented pair Darren Christie and Ben Major in the off-season, pennant selector John White is confident the club has what it takes to be a contender.
“We think we are going to be right up there in division one this year,” he said.
“They (the players) know that it is quite different to Premier League. It is very intense up in Premier League. It is going to be a lot more relaxed in division one.
“We expect to be up there at the end of the season and hopefully get back up to where we were.
“Apart from that (losing Christie and Major) we still have some pretty solid bowlers there and we think we will be very competitive.”
While the short-term goals are focused on the upcoming pennant season, the future is also looking bright for Werribee with a number of the Bees’ young stars making a name for themselves on the national stage.
Up and coming bowler Jayden Christie has been selected in the Victorian Gold Squad while Aaron Evans has been named in the Silver Squad. White said the selections were exciting news for the club.
“Jayden has been picked in the Victorian side to go to Perth next month,” he said.
“We are certainly going to promote him in our top side to a more responsible position.
“We have also got a player called Aaron Evans. He is only 13 but we are expecting him in the next few years to show similar talent to Jayden.”
Throughout the pennant season Werribee will also be holding social bowling nights on Wednesdays for members of the community looking to come and try their hand on the greens.
