LIGHTS, camera, action – and sound.
Werribee Resident Phil Okerstrom is responsible for the sound and music behind an array of multi-media art forms including film, television, game sound, web sound, theatre and puppetry.
His latest project was on the independent feature film Rites of Passage which will premiere in Melbourne next week.
The Sound Designer and Composer, who works from his Werribee studios, said he had been working on Rites of Passage for most of last year.
“It’s nice to be able to immerse myself in what I do best,” Mr Okerstrom said.
Mr Okerstrom said he had one of many important roles together with directors, actors, producers and others who worked vigorously behind the scenes, to form the final product.
“Music for film is a very big, important role and story is as equally important,” he said.
“You all play a role in synthesizing a reality that you can project towards people and uphold the suspension or disbelief,” he said.
Mr Okerstrom said sound and music in film helped take audiences further on the journey.
“Beauty of film is that you can actually influence people in what they are experiencing far more efficiently, but that’s not to say things can’t be interpreted in many different ways,” he said.
“You’re trying to project where something is going so it requires you to immerse yourself in what you think the feeling of the whole thing is.”
Mr Okerstrom, who also does mentoring, hopes to start a new project in Wyndham in the near future and has started collecting interest.
