THREE Werribee mothers will be walking towards a healthier future for their young daughters when they take part in the upcoming Weekend To End Women’s Cancers in March.
Rachel Black together with friends Tanya and Tamara have registered their team Flourish Fitness, and will take part in the 60km, two day walk benefiting the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
“We all have daughters and it seems to be becoming more and more common that women are getting, not just breast cancer, but all sorts of cancers,” Ms Black said.
“It’s our idea to do something to protect our girls when they grow up.”
Each participant of The Weekend must raise a minimum of $2000 to participate, so Ms Black and her team are working hard both on and off the tracks to make a difference.
“At the moment we are walking 20 kilometres once a fortnight and in the next couple of weeks we’re going to increase that to 25 kilometres,” she said.
“And eventually we are going to try and walk from Werribee to Williamstown.”
“We would love to get some sponsors that would be fantastic.”
“Tamara has had a car boot sale and we are doing a Bunnings sausage sizzle.”
“And we’ve been asking friends and family and local businesses to get behind us.”
Proceeds from The Weekend will provide vital funding to research and clinical care at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre which is Australia’s only public hospital solely dedicated to cancer, and home to Australia’s largest cancer research group.
“Ultimately the reward is that we know it’s going to a good cause,” Ms Black said.
“And hopefully when our girls are old enough there will be some prevention methods in place.”
