FEBRUARY marks the start of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and this weekend one of the biggest events on the calendar will kick off one of the many fundraisers to support the campaign.
The 2014 Brazilian Butterfly Queen of the Lake will be held on Sunday 9 February with many locals gearing up to take part.
Point Cook resident Alisha Vella is a big supporter of charity fun runs and is already doing her second fun run for the fortnight.
“I’m looking forward to being a part of it and being amongst all the other females there running it,” Ms Vella said.
Ms Vella said the runs were a perfect way to stay fit while also raising awareness for many important organisations like Ovarian Cancer Australia.
“For me, doing these runs is to try and improve my time while at the same time raising awareness for the different charities and running with other people,” she said.
“It’s the atmosphere on the day that motivates you.”
Organisers of the event are encouraging all women to join the event and be ‘queen’ for the day, and little princesses can join too.
Participants can choose between a 5km or 10km run or walk around Albert Park Lake and princesses can take part in the 2km Princess Run.
The Brazilian Butterfly Queen of the lake raised more than $23,000 last year for Ovarian Cancer Australia.
All funds raised go towards supporting the work and vision of Ovarian Cancer Australia who aim to save lives and ensure that no woman with ovarian cancer walks alone.
