WERRIBEE’S Lisa Markovic has been acknowledged for her invaluable community service and volunteer work with a nomination for a Victorian Young Achievers Award.
The 28 year-old has been involved with Road Trauma Victims since 2006 and became the co-founder of Road Trauma Families Victoria and Vice President/PR media consultant of the not for profit charity in 2011.
She has been successfully nominated for the Saward Dawson Community Service and Volunteering Award which recognises youth like Ms Markovic who are enthusiastically involved in the community and are passionate about making a difference.
“It’s very humbling to be recognised, I don’t think I deserve anything for doing it, it’s what I think anybody would do,” Ms Markovic said.
“I hope it does show other young people that if you are passionate about something and if you have the ability to help other people you should do it, it’s a really good and rewarding thing to do.”
Countless families and communities have benefited from Ms Markovic’s work, which includes giving personal support to families who struggle to cope with the grief of road trauma, and also working closely with community groups and organisations like Wyndham City Council and Victoria Police, to educate and raise awareness about road safety and trauma.
“Hopefully what we’re doing is getting the message through to young people and getting them to make the right decision when they are out on the roads,” Ms Markovic said.
“It’s very significant to me and my family because we lost my brother to a drunk, drug and unlicensed driver,” Ms Markovic said.
“That has really had a huge impact on our lives; our lives will never be the same with him gone,” she said.
“We thought it was important to share our story and experience with others; to help other people not end up in the same situation as we have.”
Finalists will be presented and winners announced at an Awards Gala Presentation Dinner in May.
