POLICE are searching for a man who rammed a police car in Hoppers Crossing last week, sending an officer to hospital in the process.
Detective Senior Constable Lindsay Lee said the man rammed the policeman after he was caught speeding on Derrimut Rd in Werribee at around 5.30 pm last Monday.
“A short time later (the vehicle) was discovered in the driveway of a house in Paloma Court in Hoppers Crossing,” Det Sen Const Lee said.
“The police officer intercepted the vehicle in the driveway, pulling up behind it.
“The driver of the red XR6 Falcon has reversed into the police vehicle, ramming it, before taking off.”
It is believed the unmarked police vehicle received around $17,000 worth of damage while the police officer received minor injuries.
He was taken to Werribee Mercy Hospital and was released later that night.
Det Sen Const Lee said the officer was left “shaken up” by the incident.
“It’s a horrible incident to be involved in and it would have been very scary,” she said.
“Police officers are doing their job and they have a right to return home safely at the end of their shift.
“Drivers of a motor vehicle have a responsibility to stop and to make sure that the other person is ok and to exchange details and unfortunately that hasn’t happened in this case.”
Det Sen Const Lee said it was believed that the vehicle that was used in the ramming was stolen and the driver was displaying false number plates.
The vehicle is expected to have extensive damage to its rear.
Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
